ICL: Implantable Collamer Lenses

The ultimate vision upgrade. Correct extreme prescriptions and preserve 100% of your cornea with an advanced, bio-compatible lens implanted seamlessly inside your eye.

When LASIK is Not the Answer

It can be devastating to walk into a clinic hoping for visual freedom, only to be told you "do not qualify" for LASIK. This usually happens for two reasons: your prescription is too high, or your cornea is too thin. Because LASIK permanently burns away corneal tissue to fix your vision, operating on a thin cornea is medically dangerous.

Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) completely change the rules. ICL is an "additive" procedure. Instead of removing your natural tissue, Dr. Neelam Sharma implants a microscopic, ultra-soft lens inside your eye. It functions exactly like a contact lens, but it stays permanently inside your eye, requiring zero daily maintenance.

The Unmatched Benefits of ICL

ICL is not just a backup option for LASIK; for many patients, it is the superior choice:

  • Extreme Correction: Safely treats massive prescriptions (up to -20.00 Diopters).
  • Corneal Preservation: Leaves your natural cornea 100% intact and untouched.
  • Completely Reversible: If technology advances or your vision changes, the lens can be removed.
  • No Dry Eye: Because it doesn't cut corneal nerves, it does not induce dry eye syndrome.

The Surgical Protocol

The ICL procedure is a marvel of modern microsurgery. It is performed as a fast, painless outpatient procedure, with patients returning home the very same day.

1. Micro-Incision

After your eye is completely numbed with anesthetic drops, Dr. Neelam creates a microscopic, self-sealing incision at the absolute edge of your cornea. This incision is less than 3 millimeters wide.

2. Lens Insertion

The highly advanced Collamer lens (a bio-compatible material naturally accepted by the body) is folded and gently injected through the microscopic incision. Because it is incredibly soft and flexible, it unfolds slowly once inside the eye.

3. Precision Positioning

Dr. Neelam then expertly tucks the corners of the ICL behind your iris (the colored part of your eye). The lens rests perfectly in the space between your iris and your natural crystalline lens. Once positioned, it is completely invisible to you and anyone looking at you.

4. Instant Clarity

The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes per eye. The micro-incision seals naturally without stitches. Most patients experience a profound "wow" moment, seeing the world with high-definition clarity almost immediately after sitting up from the surgical bed.

Built-In UV Protection

Beyond providing exceptional high-definition vision, particularly at night, the Collamer material contains an advanced UV blocker. This means the ICL acts as a permanent sunglass shield inside your eye, actively preventing harmful UVA and UVB rays from entering the eye and causing long-term damage to your retina.

LASIK is a 'subtractive' surgery; it uses a laser to permanently burn away corneal tissue to change the shape of your eye. ICL is an 'additive' surgery. It does not remove any of your natural tissue. Instead, a highly advanced lens is gently implanted inside the eye to correct your vision.

No. The ICL is placed behind your iris (the colored part of your eye) and in front of your natural lens. Because it sits behind the pupil, it is completely invisible to you and to anyone looking at you.

This is one of the greatest advantages of ICL. Because we do not permanently alter your cornea, the procedure is completely reversible. If your vision changes dramatically decades later, the lens can be safely removed and replaced with a stronger one, or you can simply wear glasses over it.

Unlike LASIK, which requires cutting thousands of corneal nerves and often induces temporary or chronic dry eye, the ICL procedure requires only a microscopic incision that avoids these nerves. It is highly recommended for patients who already suffer from dry eyes.

Yes, but your eye is completely numbed with powerful anesthetic drops. You may also be given a mild sedative to help you relax. The procedure takes only about 15 minutes per eye, and you will not feel any sharp pain, just a mild sensation of pressure.
